medium

An art medium is a tool or material used to create the piece of art. For example graphite,paint and markers are all mediums.

    Well, technically a medium is different than a tool. For instance, graphite is inside the pencil. The medium is graphite, and the tool is a pencil. Same with ink/pen or paint/brush. I realize it is a fine point of distinction, but nonetheless worthwhile :)
